Hats Off to You!

We just love this time of year!  Time to start your Christmas sewing (OK, we started months ago!) Here are a few really easy and fantastic gifts that you could make and give this Christmas. It is so much fun to see the girls thinking, choosing and then creating wonderful gifts to give.  They are going to love watching their loved ones open their thoughtful gifts this year.  There is nothing better!

This ear flap hat has been a really popular choice this year.  Why wouldn't you want such a cute fleece hat, lined with minky!  The girls can't stop rubbing their faces against the super soft minky.

This hat is crazy easy!  This beanie could go either way, boy or girl. It sure is hard to sew things for those boys.  This fits them perfectly!
It's not too late to knit a hat for those loved ones either!  Hats are such a fun project to try out a new technique.  Try your hand at cables, lace work or just plain old rib.  Either way it makes a really thoughtful gift for that special person.

We want to thank you for letting us teach you and/ or your daughter!  It is a joy to see their "wheels turning" and the light going on when they finally "get it!"  There is nothing better than teaching someone a skill that we love!

Our Students are Amazing!!!

Our Sewing School now has many students advancing to our Level 2 projects!  This is so exciting!  That means they have accomplished 20 Level 1 projects and have learned a lot!! On Level 2, they will become the seamstresses they have always wanted to be! Their first project on Level 2 will be making a Cathedral Window pincushion.  Some amazing techniques are learned here!
Another project on Level 2 is making this wonderful quilt!  One of our students (who is 11 years old!) finished this huge task! She entered her quilt in the fair and received a Best of Show ribbon! That's incredible!

Another fun project on Level 2 is making a decorative pillow.  They learn to put a zipper in a pillow!  I know so many adults that would never even dream of doing this!  With a little help, anyone can put in that dreaded zipper!  This pillow also teaches some fabric origami and basic piecing skills.  What a fun addition this would be!
This is the perfect project for your school binder!  It's a zipper pouch to hold all your school supplies!  Another zipper project for the advancing student! This would make a great gift too!

It's time to Celebrate!!

We are pleased to announce, that Simple Stitches is having it's 2nd Birthday!  We can hardly believe how fast the time has flown by!  We have met so many fun people through this whole process!  We couldn't have done it with out each one of you!  We are truly blessed!  It has blossomed into a sewing school that we could have only imagined!  We love working and sharing our knowledge with you! So...THANK YOU!!

So, in celebration of our 2nd Birthday, we have a fun new project!  Who doesn't like to celebrate that special day where we are a year older? ;)  Some of us never age!  The Happy Birthday place mat will teach you several different concepts.  First of all, you will learn how to piece and quilt the place mat, make your own bias tape, and binding.  Such a fun project!

To go with your Happy Birthday place mat, you for sure need a matching banner!  How fun would this be to hang up for that special someones birthday?  The fun thing about this project, is you can customize it to say anything you want!  Celebrate, Love, Believe...use your imagination, the possibilities are endless!  Sewing this banner is so much fun!  You will master machine applique by using the blanket stitch, learn how to make yo-yo's and sewing on buttons.
Hopefully we have inspired you to try something new at our sewing school!  Keep on sewing!

Beginner Projects

Every seamstress has to start somewhere, right?  I know I did! Here at Simple Stitches, we have five basic projects that we feel gives every student the basic skills they need to start sewing.  They are great projects for the student to learn the machine and to get the basics of sewing down.

The first project that students will do is Tina's Tidy Tray.  This project teaches the beginning student several things.  Right and wrong sides of the fabric, correct pinning technique, sewing straight, turning corners and more!

Every seamstress needs a pincushion!  Our second project is Pyper's Pincushion, which the student will use in class every week.  This project is a lot like the tray, re-enforcing techniques they learned on Tina's Tidy Tray.  They will also learn how to use decorative stitches, hand sewing, sewing on a button and confidence!

The next project they will tackle is Molly's Pillowcase.  By now, they should be fairly confident sewing straight lines and turning corners.  A new technique they will learn, is how to sew a French seam. They will also learn how to sew on ric-rac as a decorative trim.  Pillowcases are a fun and easy project!

After Molly's pillowcase, they will make Haley's PJ's.  Pajama's will teach them how to read and cut out a pattern, grain of the fabric, importance of notches on a pattern, use the surger, and hemming pants.  So many techniques are used in making pajama pants!

The last project they will make before choosing what project they want to make is Anna's Skirt.  A fun and easy skirt!  They will learn how to cut out a pattern (reinforcing the skills learned from Haley's PJ's), make a casing for elastic, hemming a skirt and sewing on decorative trim.

After tackling these five beginner projects, they will have the basic skill to start choosing and making so many fun projects!
