Simple Stitches Retreat

Simple Stitches Sewing School Presents...
1st Annual Simple Stitches Retreat
September 21-23, 2107

Janette & I are thrilled to be starting yet another adventure! Sewing retreats are one of our favorite things to do when we want to get away together and spend some quality time sewing. We have been to several sewing retreats and decided to cap our retreat at 20 students. This gives everyone a chance to meet each person at the retreat and you will go home with 20 new sewing friends! Plus, with a smaller group, it will allow plenty of one-on-one time with the instructors!  We have chosen a fantastic place for all of us to gather for the weekend! My Girlfriend's Quilt Shop in Logan is the perfect place for us to sew to our hearts content!

My Girlfriend's Quilt Shoppe Exterior

We love the space they have in their Attic. It's a retreat space perfect for quilters and "sewists" like you! Here are some things we love about the space:
  • Excellent lighting in addition to natural lighting coming in from large windows
  • 5 oversized cutting stations
  • Pet-free and smoke-free facility
  • Central air-conditioning and heating
  • 20% discount off ALL fabric at My Girlfriend's Quilt Shoppe during your retreat (How cool is that?!)
  • Ironing stations throughout room
  • Relaxing seating areas filled with couches and inspiration

This post should contain all the information for our retreat. When you arrive at the shop, come up to the Attic first, so we can come down and help you unload. The Attic is located up the stairs on your left when you come in the shop. Once unloaded, you can park your car in the parking lot south of the store. You are welcome to arrive any time after 1:00 pm on Thursday.  We have arranged with the wonderful ladies at the shop to let us stay until 10:00 pm on Thursday and Friday nights. On Saturday, we need to start cleaning up at 5:00 pm, because the shop closes at 6:00 pm.

This is such a fun part of the retreat!!  One reason we love doing retreats, is seeing what everyone is making! At our sewing retreat, you are welcome to bring your own project, one that you are currently working on, one that you need help with, or start a new one! We do realize some ladies need extra help coming up with projects.  For this reason, we have chosen an adorable tote to make!  The "Bon Voyage Tote," by Annie is an amazing pattern! The tote features two outer slip pockets for quick access to cell phone, keys, and more. Three inner slip pockets and a hanging zippered pocket provide secure storage for glasses, a wallet, personal items, and more. An easy-to-install zipper opens to fall flat against the bag. I am not kidding, you will LOVE this bag!

We will have kits cut and ready for you to sew.  Some of you might want to buy your own fabric and that is fine too. We HIGHLY recommend you cut out all your pieces before coming up to the retreat!! You would much rather sew than waste your time cutting! Kits will be available for $60 each. The kit will come with EVERYTHING you will need, even matching thread.  Each fabric kit will be different and unique. (The one pictured is just an example of the bag, not the fabric you will be receiving.) So much easier than trying to find things on your own.  Please let us know at the time you sign up if you would like a kit.

We also have the option for you to come pick out your fabric and have the main pieces machine quilted. Machine quilting will cost you $15 and makes the bag look so custom.  If you would rather buy your own fabric, let us know and we will email you the yardage requirements.

Each "sewist" shares an 8' table with one other "sewist". Please bring an extension cord and DON'T FORGET YOUR PEDAL. Sewing retreats are terrible when your forget that part of your machine! We encourage you to bring a good light as the lighting is sometimes a challenge at night. The Attic has dedicated work areas which include personal ironing boards, a design wall and cutting tables. There are also scattered elevated cutting tables throughout the sewing room.

Good food is nearly as important as a good workspace! If you have special dietary needs that are not met by the menu outlined below you MUST bring your own food. We are unable to accommodate special diets. There is a refrigerator to store food in if needed. For those of you wanting sodas or a personal beverage, you may want to bring your own stash. If you would like to bring snacks to share, of course that’s always encouraged!  There are a variety of options available for your dinner if you wish to go out!

2. Power Cord and Foot Pedal!!! Put a big sticky note on your door to remind you to get this on your way out the door! (See how important this is?)

3. Bring any and all projects that you want to work on. Remember this retreat is YOUR time to do whatever it is YOU wish to do!! If you want to leave early, that is fine! If you can only come Thursday and Friday, that is fine too. This is YOUR retreat! Come and go as you please.

4. Extra sewing light. Nothing is worse than trying to sew at night and the lighting isn't as good as you would like it to be.

5. Sewing Notions. This includes, scissors, seam ripper, gauge, point turner, thread coordinating with projects, extra needles, and your foot pedal...did we mention you need your foot pedal?!? If you have a walking foot, we highly recommend this if you are making the tote and we are not quilting it for you ahead of time.

6. Personal beverages or snacks if you want. If you have special dietary needs be sure to bring your own food.

8. A good sense of humor! Most important of all! :)
